A conversation with...
Edin Eder
Edin Eder dreamed of Haute Couture. But when he arrived at Institut Français de la Mode, an important encounter led him away from that dream and onto a slightly different path. Since then, Edin has designed accessories, first for Dior, then for Vuitton, where he is now head designer.
Do you remember when you first discovered fashion?
When I was three or four years old, I started drawing. The silhouettes were blurry, but the clothes and accessories were very detailed. Then, around the age of ten, I began discovering brands, fashion shows, and all the excitement surrounding the industry.
Was there an encounter in your career that changed everything for you?
Meeting Francine Pairon, who founded the fashion design department at IFM, changed everything. I immediately felt a connection with her. Franc’ saw in me something I hadn’t even realized myself, that I am truly a bag designer. I arrived at IFM dreaming of working in Haute Couture for Chanel or Dior. She looked at my portfolio and said, “Oh dear, not couture! You’re too modern for that! Your background in industrial design combined with your sensibility for beauty makes you perfect for accessory design”. I listened, I trusted her and here I am.
Can you share a moment that particularly marked you during your studies at IFM?
The pace prepared us so well for the reality of the fashion industry. But also, working with brands. I was lucky to be the only one in my class who worked on bags with Chanel, and I made the most of that opportunity.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a fashion designer?
If you’re not truly passionate and honest, forget it! You can easily recognize what I call “fake design,” and a lack of personal investment will only hold you back. Fashion isn’t fair, but if you’re lucky and the doors open for you, only hard work will get you through. But also, keep in mind: we’re not saving lives. It’s just fashion, don’t take it too seriously!
