A conversation with...
Carlos Feltes
For over six years, Carlos Feltes has been a leather goods designer at Hermès. A role he approaches with dedication, passion, and craftsmanship — all essential qualities for the creative process. Carlos is constantly learning, questioning himself, and reflecting on his work. It’s a mindset he has nurtured since his studies in accessory design at IFM, an experience he remembers fondly.
Do you remember your first discovery of fashion?
I grew up in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, at a time when access to fashion was very limited. But somehow, my mother always managed to get hold of international fashion magazines. I remember one page in particular, in one of those magazines, featuring a report on the Couture season in Paris. I was instantly captivated.
Was there a turning point in your career that changed everything for you?
Working closely with the creative directors I collaborate with is a constantly evolving, learning, and growing process. It’s always eye-opening and inspiring in some way. It keeps me wanting to push myself further and evolve even more.
Can you tell us about a moment that particularly marked you during your studies at Institut Français de la Mode?
My time at IFM was truly memorable. I still often talk about it with my former classmates. It was also incredibly intense, but with hindsight, I realise that the teachers’ intentions and feedback were genuine and constructive. Today, I see that clearly, and I’m grateful to them for it.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career as a designer?
